What it is about:
In recent times, we all find ourselves talkeing about "social norms". Whether they are a beneficial thing that allows people to get along or constructs used by a group in power to impose their agenda on others. Professor Marias takes on the big question of what it is that "makes a society be what it is" how certain behaviors are accepted or encouraged and others become disfavored or even taboo.
Why it changed my thinking:
This book is not well known outside academic circles, and it only came to my attention because my brother recommended it. Professor Maria applies his analysis to traditionally understood societies, it struck me that a lot of his work and insights is directly applicable to how companies develop their internal cultures, value systems and behaviors. This book does a better job than any "management culture" book I have read, and I have already racked a few of them.
